Compare Moped insurance: a quick guide

A moped is a motorised vehicle with a smaller engine than a motorbike - under 125cc . Our quick guide will help you find the right moped cover at the right price.

The amount you pay for moped insurance depends on a number of factors including your age, experience and the make and model of your moped.

The good news is that premiums tend to be considerably lower than for cars or larger motorbikes.

The options

  • Third party insurance is the basic cover required by law. It covers your liability to other people and their property, so they will be compensated for any damage you may cause.
  • Third party, fire and theft also covers the theft of your moped - mopeds are easy to steal - and damage by fire. It doesn't cover the cost if your moped is damaged in an accident.
  • Comprehensive insurance is a higher level of cover and includes loss or damage to your moped.

Although it's more expensive, comprehensive cover may be worth the extra in case you're involved in an accident.

Remember mopeds are smaller than motorbikes and can be harder to see on the road, especially at night. Also, other road users often misjudge the speed of a moped.

Riding to work

If you ride to work, then your standard moped insurance should cover you - most policies cover social, domestic, pleasure and commuting use (but check just in case).

If you want to use your moped for work purposes, for example visiting clients, you may need to pay extra to insure it for business use.

Specialist insurers

There are a number of specialist insurers that offer specific cover for moped owners. Most of the major insurance providers also cover mopeds.

Keeping your premiums down

As mopeds are so easy to steal, if you keep your moped in a garage or have a special security device for it you may be able to cut your premiums.

Older riders and women riders may be able to save money with some insurers.

Your excess- the first amount of each claim you have to pay - will affect your premium. Consider the maximum you would be able to pay if your moped was damaged or stolen.

Some insurers may allow you to carry over your no claims discount from another vehicle, so remember to ask.

  • A smaller engine size should mean a lower premium.
  • Third party insurance is cheaper but offers less cover
  • Do you need extra cover, for example roadside breakdown and recovery?
  • Check your excess amount - if you can afford it, a higher excess can cut your premium.
