Bike insurance: getting a good deal

From scooters to supersports, getting the right motorcycle insurance can save you a bundle. Our guide will help you find the best cover.

What matters to you?

The right bike insurance for you depends on 4 main things: your budget, your bike, where you ride and where you live.

What are your options?

  1. Third party cover

The cheapest option, this is the basic cover required by law but only pays out for damage to someone else or their vehicle.

  2. Third party, fire and theft

This costs a bit more but also covers your bike if it's stolen or destroyed by fire. This is popular with young riders and bikers with lower-value machines.

  3. Fully comprehensive

This is the widest cover, but also the most expensive. It has all the features of third party, fire and theft but will also pay to repair damage to your bike, and may offer additional features too.

It can be pricey, but it's often worth the extra for a higher-spec bike worth £2,000 or more

  4. The optional extras

Check to see if these features are included as standard or if they're available as extras:

    • insurance for your helmet and leathers and other personal possessions
    • European cover if you intend to ride your bike abroad
    • breakdown cover
    • protected no claims discount
    • legal assistance to cover legal costs that could follow an accident

Avoid the pitfalls

Check the small print for these easy-to-miss points:

  • modifications to your bike can affect your premium or a claim - check your policy carefully
  • check any mileage, garaging and security restrictions - if you don't keep to them you might not be able to claim
  • check the excess - the lower the excess, the higher the premium

Cost-cutting tips

  • If you have more than one bike, a multi-bike policy could be cheaper than insuring each one separately
  • Keep your bike in a garage.
  • Beef up your security with an insurance-approved lock and alarm, immobiliser or data tag system.
  • Take an approved advanced riding course.
  • Women riders can pay up to 10 per cent less: look out for special deals
