Compare Scooter insurance: a quick guide
A scooter is a fun, economical and practical way to get around. Our quick guide will help you find the right insurance cover at the right price.
Insuring a scooter is just like insuring any other vehicle - how much you pay depends on a number of factors including your age, experience and the model of scooter.
Scooters vary widely in performance and value, so a lot depends on what you're riding.
The options
- Third party insurance is the basic cover required by law. It covers your liability to other people and their property, so they will be compensated for any damage you cause.
- Third party, fire and theft also covers the theft of your scooter - scooters are light and easy to steal - and damage to your scooter by fire.
- Comprehensive insurance offers the widest cover, including loss or damage to your scooter. Although it's more expensive, comprehensive cover isn't as pricey as for larger bikes and may be worth the extra for your nippy new Peugeot or classic Lambretta.
Extra cover
You can add extra cover, although some companies might include some of the features in their basic premium. The following may be worth considering:
- riding abroad
- other riders riding your scooter
- help with legal costs that could follow an accident
- breakdown insurance
- cover for leathers, helmet etc
Riding to work
If you ride to work, then your standard scooter insurance should cover you - most policies cover social, domestic, pleasure and commuting use (but check just in case).
If you want to use your scooter for work purposes, for example visiting clients, you may need to pay extra to insure it for business use.
Specialist insurers
As well as the big insurance companies, specialist insurers offer specific insurance products for scooter owners.
Keeping your premiums down
You may be able to cut your premiums by keeping your scooter in a garage or having approved security fitted.
Older riders and women riders may be able to save money with some insurers.
If you already have a no claims discount from another vehicle your scooter insurer might mirror it.
Your excess - the first amount of each claim you have to pay - will affect your premium. Consider the maximum you would be able to pay should your moped be damaged or stolen.
Key points
- Unless your scooter has next to no value, insure it for theft
- A smaller engine size should mean a lower premium
- Think about which additional options you need
- Check your excess amount - if you can afford it, a higher excess can cut your premium
