“The Passionate Pursuit of Perfection” is the trademark of the Lexus. Opulent and beautiful, encapsulate the spirit of the Lexus. Since its debut in 1989, Lexus has developed a reputation for being synonymous with the luxury and reliability.  The  Lexus is noted for its well-crafted and quiet cabin, commendable performance from nearly silent and powerful engines and a highly comfortable ride.

Lexus is the luxury vehicle division of Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation.  These cars are sold globally and it is one of the highest-selling make of luxury cars in the world.  In recent years, Consumer Reports has named Lexus among the top five most reliable brands in its Annual Car Reliability Surveys.  Additionally, Lexus ranks highly on surveys of dealership customer service experience. The British Top Gear and Auto Express satisfaction surveys have had Lexus at the top of their cards since the entry of the luxury division.

The Lexus name is rumoured to have sprung from the words “luxury” and “elegance”.  Interestingly, some argue that the name is a version of Alexis, drawn from the character name of Alexis Carrington from the popular 1980s drama Dynasty.  According to Toyota, the name has no specific meaning and is just meant to be pleasing and easy to remember.

The LS 400 made its entrance in January 1989 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The following September, Lexus vehicles officially went on sale. The LS 400 was sold along with a smaller sibling, the Toyota Camry-based ES 250. The LS 400 was widely praised for its quiet and performance-based engine, well-appointed and ergonomic interior, outstanding build quality, aerodynamics, fuel economy, and fine value.

Lexus also introduced two new models in 1991, the SC 400 coupe and ES 300 sedan. In 1996, Lexus introduced its first luxury sport utility vehicle, the LX 450. In 1998, Lexus launched its first luxury crossover SUV, the RX 300 and the GS300/GS400 sedans.

Today, in the United Kingdom, the largest European market for Lexus, the IS series accounts for the largest number of new Lexus sales.  The second generation IS, which emerged in 2006 as an alternate choice to the dominant German and British marquees' compact executive cars, has since become a primary factor for Lexus' dealings in Europe. With Lexus sales' increasing in the UK due to the introduction of the new IS series, LS flagship, and a GS/RX hybrid, Lexus has emerged as a European luxury brand with substantial prosperity. Total Lexus Europe sales increased 72% in 2006 to over 50,000 vehicles, making Lexus one of the fastest growing brands on the continent.

Lexus' reputation rests primarily upon its product quality and the shared history of its parent company, Toyota. The characteristics of tradition established over many years, and pedigree, are regarded by some reviewers as a challenge for Lexus - it appears that Lexus will have to grow and develop its own heritage by investing in technological ideas and producing substantial products.  Such examples can already be seen in the Lexus car concepts, such as the LF Series. Unique features on the LF Series concept vehicles include advanced instrumentation, multiple driver-selected vehicle configurations, concept security features, and unconventional driver interface designs.

The complete Lexus range is well assembled and ultimately offers value for money in what has traditionally been an overpriced area.  The Lexus brand competes in a market where there is stiff competition from various luxury car manufacturers.  However, the continued passion evoked by these cars and due to their demonstrated reliability and quality, the  Lexus looks set to be a tough contender to beat.
