Nissan has gone under many guises. Starting life as the Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works in 1911, the company changed its name to Datsun before eventually becoming Nissan, and is now part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance. Nissan has produced a wide range of successful cars and trucks in its time, initially for the domestic Japanese market, then internationally since the 1950s.
Despite many decades of success, the firm ran into severe financial difficulties in the 1990s. Its rescue came in the unlikely form of a strategic partnership with French carmaker Renault in 1999. Renault chief Carlos Ghosn became CEO of the new venture, and is credited with turning Nissan’s fortunes around – a feat he’d previously achieved at Renault, earning the nickname ‘Le Cost Killer’. The first model launched by the Nissan-Renault Alliance was the Nissan Primera in 2001. Since then, Nissan's Micra, Note and Versa models have all proved popular, benefitting from the same mechanical design as the Renault Clio. Now producing the Note, Micra and Qashqai in the UK, Nissan is well and truly back.
