Electric van 'could offer cheaper motoring'
28/06/2008
An electric van could offer cheaper motoring to drivers of vans and commercial vehicles as the running costs are the same as the increase in the price of driving a diesel van, an expert has claimed.
Diesel vans now cost an extra £1,250 per year to run - which is the same amount it costs to power the Modec for a whole year.
Trevor Power, spokesperson for van manufacturer Modec, has pointed out that the vehicle costs just seven pence per mile, compared to 29 pence for an equivalent diesel van.
Van insurance customers may be interested to know that the Modec is a zero emission commercial vehicle that is powered by lithium ion batteries and provides a green alternative to diesel fleets.
As well as being cost effective, Mr Power highlights that the Modec is also environmentally friendly as it eliminates an average of nine tonnes of CO2 for every diesel vehicle it replaces.
He said: "Despite often being viewed as a solution for the future, electric vehicles are an economically viable reality and in use within commercial fleets today. During the six years of development invested in the Modec, we made significant advances in the technologies used and have created a commercial vehicle that offers a serious alternative to the diesel fleet."
Mr Power adds that the Modec has other advantages in that it will not be affected by fuel strikes that are planned across the UK.
The Newcastle Journal reports that electric van manufacturer Tanfield recently announced that it had won a £7 million contract to deliver the largest fleet of zero emission vehicles in the world to distribution firm TNT.
