Van registrations fall in July

18/08/2008

According to the society, there was a 16.7 per cent fall in van registrations last month, although this represented a 0.2 per cent increase on the number recorded for the rolling year, van insurance customers may be interested to learn.

Meanwhile truck registrations increased by 9.2 per cent in July, bringing the rise for the rolling year to 21.5 per cent.

Commenting on the figures, Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, said: "Strong truck registrations continue to balance weaker performances in other commercial vehicle sectors.

"In the current economic climate, it is no surprise to see that van registrations have fallen and at 2.5 per cen down year to date, [they give] a strong indication of the pressures being felt by businesses in the UK. We do, however, expect to maintain the overall van and truck registration levels we saw last year."

Demand for commercial vehicles among van insurance customers and other road users has fallen in recent months, according to British Car Auctions (BCA).

The organisation reported that values of vans fell by £200 to £3,499 in June, compared with the previous month – representing the largest fall recorded so far in 2008.

Duncan Ward, UK business development at the BCA, said a slowdown in the light commercial vehicle market is something the sector has not experienced "for some considerable time".
