What Car? has announced it hold the first ever Green Awards at the British International Motor Show this year.

The publication states that the awards have been planned in response to the increased requests from its readers for information on green cars.

An overall Green Car of the Year will be named on the day of the awards, which take place on July 22nd, and there will be ten other categories.

Visitors to the show will also be able to view the latest technology and green cars at the show, which may interest car insurance customers.

Steve Fowler, group editor at What Car?, said: "With increasing environmental concerns among car buyers the time is right for a recognised Green Awards. The focus of the awards will be a car's environmental credentials, but the winners will also be great cars to own and run without any compromises."

Duncan McClure, managing director of Warranty Direct, who will sponsor the What Car? Green Awards, added that it is important that "efforts and achievements" are recognised by the motor industry.

Meanwhile, the Independent reported yesterday that British inventor Sir James Dyson has revealed that he is working on a project to create an electric car that can drive for hundreds of miles after being charged through solar panels on the roof.

The scientist also told the newspaper he predicts that electric cars will be "the future" of transport and will outnumber petrol vehicles within the next decade.

Developments of the new motor are under way at Sir Dyson's research laboratory in Wiltshire.
