Younger drivers sent road safety messages via text

30/07/2008

Younger drivers are being targeted with a road safety alert via their mobile phones, it has been reported.

According to online resource Motors Today, thousands of people in Scotland will be receiving text messages as they attend cinemas in the nation.

The news provider states that when the message is opened it will show footage of a motorist who crashes when they are distracted by a text message, the words "One distraction is all it takes" will then be displayed on the screen.

It is hoped that as result of this initiative Scotland's roads will become a safer place for all drivers, which could be good news for car insurance customers.

Speaking to the news provider about this new campaign transport minister Stuart Stevenson said: "Too many people are still dying on Scotland's roads and sadly, young drivers continue to be over-represented in these deaths.

"As a government, we are constantly looking at new ways to reach this age group and I am determined that we look beyond the traditional and towards the innovative in our efforts to save lives."

He added that it is thought this style of warning will be effective as some 97 per cent of young people aged between 18 and 24-years-old who own mobile phones.

Meanwhile, the Times recently reported that Department for Transport statistics have shown more motorists are sticking to the 30 miles per hours speed limit, something it attributed to hard-hitting road safety campaigns.
