Frequently thought questions

We’ve put together the following questions about things often wondered but rarely ask, about getting the right policy for your motorbike.

What do I need to know to get an insurance quote for my motorbike?

You’ll need the following basic info to get a motorbike insurance quote and start comparing prices:

  • Make and model of your motorbike – and registration if known
  • The year your bike was manufactured (we can fetch quotes for any bike manufactured during or after 1970)
  • Details of any modifications after manufacture
  • The value of your motorcycle and the date you bought it
  • How long you’ve held your motorbike licence for
  • Details of any claims or convictions you may have had
  • Names of any additional riders – full details including claims and convictions
  • Any special security devices you carry or have had fitted to your motorcycle

Which motorbike cover is right for me?

There are three levels of motorbike insurance policies to choose from:

Third party only

This is the minimum required by the law. It’ll cover you for any damage you do to others and their vehicles. However, it won’t cover repairs to your motorbike, personal medical expenses or theft.

Third party fire and theft.

This will offer the same cover as third party with added protection for your bike in case of fire or, you guessed it, theft.

This is the full-monty of motorbike insurance. All of the above, as well as cover for yourself and repairs to your motorbike in the event of an accident.

What factors affect the cost of my motorbike insurance?

A cheaper motorbike insurance policy, who wouldn’t want that? There are two big things to consider which may help reduce the cost of your policy.

Keep it secured

Fitting an approved alarm or lock could significantly reduce the cost of your policy, along with storing it in a garage or secure lock-up at night.

Improve your skills

Riders with more advanced motorcycle qualifications could be eligible for lower premiums (sometimes up to 10% cheaper, nice). This includes qualifications such as the Bike Safe Certificate, Advanced Police Motorcycle Test and MAC Rider Training.

  • Advanced Police Motorcycle Test
  • Bike Safe Certificate
  • BMF Blue Riband
  • BMF Certificate of Proficiency
  • DSA Examiners Motorcycle Test
  • Enhanced Riders Bonus
  • IAM Motorcycle Test
  • MAC Rider Training
  • Post Test Training Register
  • RSPOA Motorcycle Gold
  • The Edge
