What do I need to compare pet insurance

You'll need to have some basic details about your pet handy.

This includes the animal’s age, breed, gender, how much you paid or donated for them, and information on whether they’ve been neutered, spayed or chipped.

What does pet insurance cover?

Unfortunately, there’s no NHS for animals. So if your pet gets ill, injured or has an accident, the vet bills will have to be paid out of your pocket. Pet insurance is designed to cover these costs.

Policies can vary and include a few extras. For instance, some pet insurance policies include cover if your animal goes missing which could be a one off payment up to an agreed limit if your pet is not found– and can even cover any costs involved in advertising to help find your pet again or a reward to encourage people to find them. Most can include third party liability, in the event your pet injures someone or causes an accident.

However, routine trips to the vet for things such as neutering and vaccinations are unlikely to be covered by a pet insurance policy, nor will any pre-existing conditions if you move provider.

What type of pet insurance is right for me?

There four main types of pet insurance.

Picking the right policy for you and your pet will come down to personal factors such as the age of your pet, it’s susceptibility to illness or accident, and how much you’re willing to pay in the event your pet needs medical care.

Accident only. This type of policy will cover your pet in the event of an accident, but not long term illness. There may also be limits on the amount of time and money allowed for treatment.

Time Limited. This will cover illnesses as well as accidents, but only for a limited amount of time. These policies may also come with a maximum payout.

Max Benefit. As a ‘per condition policy’, but as the name suggests without any limit on the length of treatment. This can be useful if your pet experiences a chronic or persistent illness.

Lifetime. This is the most complete type of pet insurance available. Covering all accidents, injuries or illnesses for the lifetime of your pet, subject to limits as advised in the policy. These policies can even include extras such as dental cover and expenses for burial.

For all types of pet insurance policy, you will have to pay an excess with each claim you make.
