5G-whizz: Vodafone launches ultra-fast network in seven cities

Vodafone has launched its 5G network – giving Brits their ‘fastest mobile speeds ever’ in seven cities.

Lewis Hamilton, F1 world champion, was welcomed to the stage at the launch event, to switch on 5G in Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, Birmingham, and London.

Expansion in the pipeline

More areas will be connected to it later in the year, including Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Warrington and Wolverhampton.

5G is the latest generation of mobile communication, which promises to deliver movie downloads in under four seconds and improve connectivity for crowds at festivals and other big events. 5G can provide wireless connection up to 250 times faster than the current 4G network.

Although Vodafone was the first UK operator to announce their launch date of 5G, its rival EE was the first network to offer 5G in May.

O2 and Three are yet to provide an official date for the launch of 5G, but promise it will be available before 2020.

The geographical coverage of 5G will vary slightly between Vodafone and EE, but Vodafone has launched a postcode checker, where you can see promised indoor and outdoor 5G coverage.

Along with EE’s launch, residents of London, Cardiff and Birmingham now have two 5G networks to choose from.

Customers hoping to use Vodafone’s 5G network will need to upgrade to a 5G compatible handset, to benefit from fast downloads and connectivity. The Samsung Galaxy S10 and Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 phones are currently available at Vodafone, along with the GigaCube – a wireless router that can connect to 64 devices in seconds.

“This breakthrough in technology is going to change the way that wireless devices are connected to the internet. Not only is Vodafone offering 5G compatible phone handsets, but they’ve also released the GigaCube wireless router.

“Where we currently see home routers struggling to serve lots of devices, 5G will increase the amount of devices that can connect at high speeds, improving the smart home experience. It's the simplest way to transform your home internet connection.”
