What are the benefits of bundling broadband, phone and TV?

Grouping together some, or all, of your internet, phone and TV services is becoming the norm and there are lots of benefits to bundling. Getting your broadband, phone and TV package from one provider isn’t just more convenient, it could save you money too.

Providers are keen to get as much of your business as they can, and may offer incentives like discounts, vouchers and premium TV channels at reduced prices. Most of us have heard of the key players offering broadband, phone and TV deals - like Sky, BT and Virgin. But depending on where you live, you could also find packages from other providers, for example Now TV, EE and TalkTalk.

If you're buying all three services together, think about what your household needs from each one. For example, when it comes to broadband, think about how speedy it needs to be. Or, if you’re incorporating your phone into the package, consider whether calls will be made to landline, mobile or international numbers.

How do I choose the best broadband deal?

To find the best broadband deal for you, you should start with these four things:

  • Speed – when it comes to broadband, speed is almost everything. You want to make sure that any broadband deal you choose offers the speeds to keep up with your activity. If there are lots of you in the house, or you enjoy lots of downloading, streaming or online gaming, you’ll want solid speeds of 50Mbps+
  • Price – while speed is what makes a broadband service useful, it doesn’t matter much if it’s costing you the earth. So, you should be comparing speeds alongside their prices. That’s where we can help.
  • Availability – depending on where you live, your area may not have access to every type of broadband connection. You can find out which broadband deals are available in your area by using our postcode checker.
  • Customer service – finding a great speed for a cheap price is a fantastic start, but customer service is important too. At some point, your connection could suffer, and having access to a good customer service team can make a huge difference when you need it most. Have a look at some customer ratings, before you commit to a deal.
  • Contract length – if you’ve found a deal with all of the above, you next need to think about the contract length. While a price might look good now, broadband providers are constantly competing for you, so don’t tie yourself down for too long, unless it’s a particularly good deal.
  • Download limits - some broadband deals come with a download limit, which means you’ll be limited on the amount of data you can use. However, all broadband deals available through Compare the Market offer unlimited data, so you don’t need to worry about download limits with us.
  • Equipment – if you’re upgrading to a better type of broadband connection, you might need some new tech installing. Sometimes this is free, sometimes there’s a charge, so be sure to check.
  • Freebies and rewards – broadband providers are regularly offering freebies as incentives to attract new customers. This could be a voucher, bill credit, cash back or even a piece of tech. Just remember, gifts are lovely, but make sure you have everything else you need.

How do I choose the best phone deal?

A phone deal is relatively simple, compared to broadband and TV, so here’s what to look for:

  • Free call periods – you’ll usually get certain periods when you can make free calls. The standard inclusions are evenings and weekends, but some will include free calls anytime.
  • Free landline minutes – perhaps instead of, or even on top of, your free call periods, you could have access to free landline minutes. A common example would be the first hour of a call is free, go any longer and you’ll need to start paying.
  • International calls and calls to mobiles – you’ll normally be charged extra for calls to mobiles or international numbers. If you make these sorts of calls, check the rates before you sign up.
  • Price – while there was a lot of ‘free minutes’ mentioned above, you’re obviously going to be paying for those calls as part of your monthly subscription. If you don’t find yourself using the landline often, or don’t make calls to mobiles or international numbers, don’t pay the extra for those features.

How do I choose the best TV deal?

Comparing TV deals comes down to three main things:

  • Channels – some TV deals come with hundreds and hundreds of channels. Do you want access to them all, or just a select few? If you’re into sport, sport channel packages like Sky Sports and BT Sport are common, while there are similar selections for film (e.g. Sky Cinema), kids and more.
  • Features – do you want to be able to watch TV on demand or on the go? Do you want to access digital TV all over the house? These are examples of extra features available with TV deals.
  • Price – all of the above might sound perfect, but it’ll cost you. So, decide what’s really important to you and whether it’s worth paying for. We can help you compare TV deals to find the right balance.

What else should I consider before committing to a broadband, phone and TV package?

When considering broadband, phone and TV deals, you’ve got to ask yourself whether it’s worth it for your digital habits. There are a lot of things going into that bundle, so, do you really need them all?

  • Broadband – what sort of user are you? If you’re a busy home with lots of people, stream lots of films and TV, game online or work from home, then you’ll want a fast service and a bundle could save you money. If you just need to check your emails and do a bit of online shopping, then you could stick with a basic service.
  • TV - do you really need all of those channels? Streaming services like Netflix, NOWTV, Amazon Prime and Disney+ are offering new ways to watch TV and film. Combined, they’d cost more than a TV bundle, but they do offer the flexibility of a rolling monthly subscription, allowing you to cancel more easily.
  • Phone – while you don’t technically need a landline to get broadband, bundled deals that require you to have one can be the cheapest. So even if you don’t intend to use the landline, it might still be worth getting the connection.

Finally, if you’re looking at broadband, phone and TV packages, the options available to you are going to be far fewer. There aren’t too many providers that will offer all three, which leaves you with less choice. If you’re willing to take separate deals for all these services, you could perhaps better tailor them to your needs, or even get a better price by shopping around. That’s where we come in, to help you compare deals.

What our expert says...

"Bundling your broadband, TV and phone makes sense for several reasons. You could potentially save money with a bundle discount, but it can also save you hassle and life admin, because you'll only have one provider to deal with. If this is important to you, a bundle is well worth considering. Just don't get too comfortable with that one provider, as you can end up paying more for remaining loyal. Switching provider is one of the best ways to save money on your digital bundle... and that's where we come in."

Frequently asked questions

Can I add my mobile phone to a broadband, phone and TV bundle?

Some providers now offer mobile add-ons for their broadband, TV and phone bundles, giving you the option to package your mobile spending with the rest of your bills.

One thing to remember if you’re considering adding mobile to your package is whether your mobile service will be provided through your provider’s partnered network. So it might be worth checking network coverage in your area before you commit to making the switch.

If I agree to bundle, how long am I committed for?

That depends on the type of contract, so always read the small print. Typical contract lengths range from 12 to 24 months.

Many broadband, phone and TV deals come with 'introductory offers', which give you a reduced price for a certain length of time. If this is the case, make sure you know when that period ends and how much more you'll have to pay afterwards. Unfortunately, loyalty doesn't always pay when it comes to broadband. It's worth shopping around as you approach the end of your fixed deal, to make sure you're not paying over the odds.

If I'm not satisfied with my package, can I switch?

Most new contracts come with a ‘cooling off’ period, usually up to 14 days. During this time, you should be able to switch your broadband, phone and TV package without any penalties.

Check the terms of your contract to see if there are any costs incurred for ending your package early.

Is it easy to switch broadband, phone and TV providers?

If you’ve already come to the end of your contract’s term, switching from one broadband, phone and TV bundle to the other is pretty easy. When signing up with your new provider, they’ll be the ones who should take that awkward conversation with your old provider off your hands, doing all the legwork for you.

If you’re still in the middle of your contract, then you’ll almost certainly need to pay some sort of cancellation fee. The process would remain the same as above, but you’ll need to decide if leaving now is worth the extra cost.

Finally, if you’re only wanting to change one or two of your services, that’s when it can get more complicated. If you’re still contracted to your bundle, then you’ll have to pay that cancellation fee. If you’re not? Then you’ll be free to change your deal, but you’ll need to sort each of them out individually.

Can I get a broadband and TV package without a phone?

To get the most out of your broadband, it’s generally best to have an active landline connection. This goes for all physical telecom networks including BT’s Openreach network and Virgin Media’s fibre optic cable network. It also applies to satellite TV, cable TV and Freeview platforms, which all require a phone line to access their services.

It’s possible to get broadband and TV without having a landline installed, but you’ll probably find you have a reduced service. What’s also worth noting is that it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get this as a bundle, so it’s likely that you’d have to source separate deals.

Can I get fibre broadband with a broadband, phone and TV bundle?

Yes, while ADSL is the most commonly available broadband in the UK, fibre broadband has largely caught up across most of the country. Most of the big broadband, phone and TV bundles will offer fibre broadband, so look out for the speeds on offer.

Can I bundle a streaming service with my broadband and phone?

The rise of the streaming service has swept the nation, with millions of people now subscribing to platforms like Netflix, NOWTV, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and more. If these are just as important to you as the other channel packages, you’ll find that most of the big providers will include access to those streaming services.

Can I add sport to my bundle?

If you’re really into sports and you don’t want to miss a minute of the action, whether it’s the Premier League and Champions League in football, the F1 grand prix or the latest test match, there are a variety of sports packages available for TV bundles. These are usually added as extras, on top of a base package, and can include Sky Sports, BT Sport and more.
