A simples guide

Where can I find the best broadband deals

From work and communication to entertainment and gaming, the internet is the best thing since sliced bread.

For many of today’s households broadband is an absolute necessity. But where do you find a good broadband deal, and how do you choose?

Whether you’re seeking super-fast fibre or cost-effective connectivity, we’ve got the lowdown on picking the perfect package.

Where can I find the best broadband deals?

Finding the right kind of broadband is one thing. But finding it at the right price can be an altogether different challenge. Problem solved. At comparethemarket.com our deal checker features the latest packages and prices from a who’s who of top providers, including TalkTalk, Plusnet, Sky, Virgin, BT, and EE. All you need to do is enter your postcode, then compare the results by speed, cost, offer, and contract length. It’s quick, simple, and absolutely free – what’s not to love?

If you’re still scratching your head as to what you want from your broadband deal however, here are some other things to think about.

Different broadband packages

Today’s market has no shortage of broadband packages, all offering different speeds, download limits, and contract lengths. Many providers also offer tailor-made packages designed especially for families, students, and businesses too. It’s important before you begin your hunt to think about how much you’ll be using the internet in the first place.

Heavyweight users: do you spend hours streaming the latest blockbusters, downloading lots of music, or gaming online? Do you often have multiple devices connected to the internet at the same time? If so, you’re probably going to want to prioritise speed and have unlimited usage. Go for the packages that offer the most gigabytes for your money.

Middleweight users: if you use t’interweb for everyday things like Facebook, YouTube, online shopping, and general browsing, then a top-spec broadband deal will probably be a bit of a waste. Look for something that offers plenty of speed (around 8Mbps is usually sufficient), and around 10-30GBs a month download limit.

Featherweight users: some people only venture online to fire off the odd email, do some internet banking, or have the occasional browse. If this is you, there are plenty of basic packages available with budget-friendly price tags.

What do all these numbers mean?

If you’re not the techie type, it’s quite easy to be overwhelmed by all the numbers, particularly when it comes to speed and download limits. It’s not nearly as complicated as it sounds though. Here’s what you need to know.

Speed: broadband speed is measured in Mbps, or megabits per second. The higher the number is, the faster your internet connection will be. If you only use the web for things like browsing, internet banking or just sending emails, you probably won’t need anything beyond 2Mbps. If you’re an avid online gamer or like to stream HD movies however, then you’ll probably want something speedier to keep up with you, like super-fast fibre optic broadband.

Download limits: put simply, your broadband’s download limit is how much you’ll be able to use it each month. The download limit is measured in GB, or gigabytes, with a higher number indicating a greater monthly allowance. If you go over that allowance you’ll usually be charged. Many of today’s providers offer unlimited packages, which are preferable for most people. But if you’re not a big internet user you can sometimes save money by opting for a capped deal instead. These can range from 10-20GB per month which offers plenty for browsing and emailing, to 40GB for on-demand TV, movies, music downloads, and everything else.

Standalone, or bundle deal?

If you’re on the prowl for the best broadband deals, then you may want to have a look at combined broadband, landline, and TV packages too. Sometimes it can cost more to pay for these services separately, so it’s worth seeing if you can save by killing two or three birds with one stone. So why not start a quote now?
