What is Community Fibre?

Founded in 2013, Community Fibre specialises in bringing full-fibre broadband to London’s homes and businesses.

It delivers broadband services exclusively through its own independent network with, as of August 2024, roughly 300,000 customers across the capital and some surrounding regions. The full fibre technology allows it to offer high speeds for both downloads (for streaming movies and music) and uploads (for online gaming and video calling). This is known as symmetrical broadband speed.

Key features of Community Fibre broadband include:

  • Gigabit-capable broadband speeds of up to 3Gbps (both download and upload)
  • Free router and installation
  • No need for a landline
  • More consistent performance for activities such as streaming, online gaming and downloading large files
  • TV add-ons available

How good is Community Fibre?

Community Fibre’s 3Gbps package has some of the fastest broadband speeds available nationwide. Since March 2022, its customers have had a reliable service of over 99.9% availability.

Using its own independently owned full-fibre network, it brings fibre broadband directly into the home. This makes lag and drops in connection less likely than part-fibre and ADSL, which use slower copper wiring to help establish connectivity.

Community Fibre broadband offers:

  • Coverage throughout the whole home
  • Priority support (for 3Gbps customers)
  • Unlimited calls to UK landlines and mobiles
  • 4K TV viewing (payable extra)
  • Antivirus protection

What are Community Fibre prices like?

You can expect to pay £56 a month for its 3Gbps package while its cheaper deals start at £21 a month for 150Mbps.

Its social tariff broadband Community Fibre Essential currently costs £12.50 a month.

What speeds can I expect with Community Fibre?

Here’s an idea of how fast your internet could be:

Package Download speed Upload speed
Essential 35Mbps 35Mbps
150Mbps 150Mbps 150Mbps
1Gbps 920Mbps 920Mbps
3Gbps 3Gbps (expect speeds between 500-800Mbps*) 3Gbps (expect speeds between 500-800Mbps*)

* Community Fibre says its headline speeds are for a single wired (ethernet) connection to the router it provides. WiFi is typically slower than a wired connection and it says its lower WiFi speeds are what you can expect when in the same room as the router. It adds that your speed will be divided and shared between all connected devices, so it’s best to have a higher speed for households with many users.

The broadband speed you need for your home depends on your internet use. Faster speeds will be necessary for data-heavy activities such as high-resolution 4K streaming and online gaming.

Frequently asked questions

Does Community Fibre use Openreach?

No. It operates its own independent full-fibre network that it doesn’t share with any other provider. This enables fast, reliable connectivity direct to your home.

Do I need a landline with Community Fibre?

No. It bypasses the need for a telephone line by running fibre optic cables directly into your home. However, it does offer VOIP (Voiceover Internet Protocol), which allows you to make voice calls using your broadband connection instead of a traditional phone line.

For this service to work, you must have an active broadband connection and power supply (as well as not having a separate activated landline).

Who owns Community Fibre?

It is owned by several investors:

  • Warburg Pincus LLC
  • DTCP
  • Railpen
  • NDIF
  • Amber Infrastructure

In July 2020, Warburg Pincus and DTCP acquired a controlling stake in Community Fibre.

How do I cancel Community Fibre?

To cancel, contact the provider directly. If you cancel the contract before the minimum term ends, it could result in an early termination fee. This is calculated using the number of months left on your contract.

If you’re moving to an area Community Fibre doesn’t cover, or are closing an account due to bereavement, the company can offer tailored support.
