Do I need insurance as a window cleaner?

Firstly, whether you personally need insurance will depend if you are self-employed or employed by a company. If you’re employed by someone it’s worth reviewing the cover that they have in place first to see if it provides enough protection.

If you work for yourself, in general there are two types of liability insurance for you to think about.

Public Liability Insurance

Public liability insurance means that you’re covered if a customer or any other member of the public makes a claim for damages or injury against your business. Many policies start with £1 million worth of cover, but you can usually choose to increase the amount if you feel it’s necessary – but your premiums will rise to reflect this.

It’s all too easy to think that the worst only happens to other people, but by their very nature, accidents can’t be second guessed. Which is why it pays to make sure you’re protected right from the outset. And whilst not a legal requirement, public liability insurance will provide cover should any members of the public make a claim against your business. So if you’re a window cleaner and looking for public liability insurance, look out for the following features:

  • Cover for damage caused to windows or property during cleaning
  • Cover for treatment if you cause injury to anyone by using cleaning chemicals
  • Compensation if clients’ keys are lost

Employers’ Liability Insurance

If you employ other people, then you’ll need employers’ liability insurance by law. If you’re caught without it then you could be fined up to £2,500 for every day that you don’t have it. Employers’ liability should also cover you for all temporary staff including students. The only exception to needing employer’s liability is if you only employ close relations.

What else should I consider?

You’ll need to think of all aspects of your business and not just about being covered for accidents.

If your window cleaning takes you far and wide and you’re travelling lots of miles a day in a work van, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got appropriate van insurance. Being on the roads for long periods of time increases the risk of being involved in an accident and your insurance provider needs to factor this in when calculating your premium; so it’s really important to make sure that you’re upfront and honest about your mileage. Failing to disclose any relevant information could lead to your policy becoming invalid – and that goes for any policy you have, regardless of what it’s for.

Also consider whether your tools are adequately covered in case of theft or damage. If you store your equipment in your work vehicle make sure you tell your insurance provider. Or if you store them elsewhere, such as if you’re based at a business premises, then make sure both your buildings and contents are protected.

How much will it cost me?

Your premiums are based on multiple factors such as the size of your business, how much cover you want and your claims history. Don’t be tempted to simply opt for the first insurance policy that comes your way, think about what you really need because you might find you need it one day. Remember – cheapest isn’t always best.
