17 year old car insurance

At 17 years old, having your own driving licence gives you independence and the freedom to explore. However, there’s always that problem of finding suitable car insurance that isn’t too expensive hanging over your head. This is why we are here to help you find the best possible deal with our car insurance price comparison service, connecting you with your ideal insurance partner.

Why are premiums so high for young drivers?

Unfortunately, although only 12% of people on the road are young drivers, statistics show that 17-24 year olds are responsible for 24% of all car accidents in the UK.  In fact, stats show that one in every five young drivers will be involved in an accident within their first six months on the road. This, along with the fact you have no driving history, is why car insurance premiums for you will be higher than that of an experienced driver.

What is the minimum legal requirement for car insurance?

The lowest level of car insurance cover available is third party insurance. With this policy, if you were to be involved in an accident, your insurer would cover the cost of medical expenses or compensation for the other driver and any repairs needed to their car.

However just because it’s the lowest level of cover, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be the cheapest premium for you, so make sure you compare other cover options. However, if a higher level of cover is more expensive, the protection it provides for you may be worth the expense.

What is a good car for affordable 17 year old car insurance premiums?

When buying your first car, how do you know which model is best for you?  When taking the price of your car insurance premium into consideration, it’s a good idea to choose a more modest vehicle with a smaller engine.

Our data shows that the Citroen C1 was the cheapest car in February 2016 to insure for young drivers, with an average quote of £960.35 and the Peugeot 107 is not far behind with an average price of £968.73. The Fiat 500 and Ford Ka are also on the cheaper end of the scale to insure. This is based on the quotes from all our customers with different age ranges, addresses and driving histories. However you may find a cheaper or more expensive quote based on your personal circumstances.

How to reduce the cost of car insurance for 17 year olds?

There are a number of ways to reduce the cost of your premium, from choosing the right car, to proving that you are a safe driver.

The first thing you can consider is taking a Pass Plus Course, which will help you improve areas of your driving ability you may not have experience with like motorway driving, different weather conditions and advanced driving techniques. Some insurers may reduce your premium if you have passed your Pass Plus.

Also, you have the option of getting a telematics or “black box policy”, letting the insurance company track your driving performance. This works by having a small device installed into your vehicle or an app on your phone that tracks aspects of your driving like your acceleration, braking and cornering. It then uses this information to calculate a score, which your insurer can then look at and decide how you drive. This could help to reduce the amount you will pay on your premium, but it also could increase if you’re driving too fast, braking too harshly or cornering too fast.

Once you have been driving for a year and you haven’t made a claim on your car insurance, your insurer might offer you a no claims bonus. This means that you can earn a discount on your premium, which can increase with every year without a claim, the saving can be quite substantial over long period of time.

What should I take into consideration to reduce my car insurance quote?

Some car insurance companies will also take into consideration where your vehicle is parked when you are not driving it. A car that is kept on a driveway could be cheaper to insure than one that is parked on the street as the chances of it being stolen are decreased. However, if this is not an option for you then installing approved security equipment, such as a car alarm may reduce the cost with some insurance providers.  The area in which you live in will also influence the price of your premium.

Larger cities like Birmingham, Liverpool and London are statistically the higher risk places to live when looking for cheap car insurance, while at the other end of the scale, areas such as Aberdeen, Plymouth and Bristol are reported to be the cheapest.

Another option you have to consider is adding an older, more experienced driver to your policy if they’re planning on using the car too.  By spending less time behind the wheel, your chances of having an accident are reduced and therefore you are less likely to make a claim.  However, this is only an option if you are the main driver of the vehicle and if the other person actually uses the car. If they don’t ever drive the car, or are the main driver then you could face prosecution as this is illegal and called ‘fronting’.

Which type of car insurance cover is right for me?

Overall, the type of policy you choose will have an outstanding impact on the rate of your premium, so it is important to consider which is most suitable to you.

Firstly you have third party only insurance, which is the minimum legal requirement to get you car on the road. The second option available is third party fire and theft, which will protect you against any damage or loss caused to your car by fire and theft. Unfortunately, in the event of an accident you would not be able to make a claim on your insurance to repair your car and they would only cover any damage or injury caused to any other drivers involved.

Finally, you have comprehensive cover available to you. This is the only policy of the three that will pay out for any damage or injury caused to you or your car in an accident.. This even includes replacing your vehicle if it is written off. Comprehensive cover incorporates all the benefits of the other policies, whilst taking care of your car and getting you back on the road.
