What’s it all about?

Black box technology means that Drive Smart can collect data from the box in your car and see just how you drive. This isn’t because they want to be looking over your shoulder constantly, it’s so that they can offer you the best insurance deal they can, because they know whether you’re a safe driver or not.

How is it fitted into my car?

The black box will be fitted by a professional engineer who will normally place it behind the dashboard, so that’s its hidden from view. Your Drive Smart car insurance will still insure you to drive your car before the box is fitted, but you must make arrangements with the engineer to have it fitted between 15 and 28 days after your policy has started.

What does the box do?

It sends Drive Smart data about the way you drive. For example, how you corner, brake and accelerate, as well as how many miles you haver travelled and whether or not you drive at night (this is because studies show that young drivers are more accident prone between the hours of 9pm and 4am). Drive Smart doesn’t have a curfew, but it might affect your premiums if you do a lot of night driving. Drive Smart don’t restrict your driving at all, not even your mileage.

Do I get feedback?

Yes, Smart Drive will send you feedback through your black box dashboard, which you can access from a computer, tablet or smart phone. You’ll be able to see your driving history and how well you’re doing. If there are things which you aren’t doing so well on, such as speeding or accelerating harshly, your dashboard will tell you.
