Compare Smart car insurance

If you’re reading this the chances are that you’re either buying, have bought or thinking of buying a Mercedes-Benz Yes, a Mercedes Benz no less. The Smart car is the baby brother (or sister if you prefer), in the family of the iconic German car brand.

You won’t be doing 0-60 in 3.7 seconds like the big brother Mercedes-AMG, but then unlike him you’ll be getting up to a cool 62 mpg according to the manufacturer.

There’s also the small matter of parking in your local supermarket too. We don’t know about you, but we know which Smart Car we fancy getting into that tight parking space in!

If you’re looking at the Smart, it’s likely that you’re being smart, yes, pardon the pun, with your well earned money. You’re looking for something that’s cheap to run whilst still being bang on trend.

What affects the price of insurance for a Smart car?

It’s not a great idea to buy a car only to then struggle to run it. Your car insurance is an important component of your running costs.

Your insurance premium will obviously depend on a number of factors, which many of these relate to you personally. How old you are, how long you’ve been driving and where you live for example. All of these have a bearing on the cost of your policy.

The car you drive will also make a big difference. The market value of the car is one aspect the insurer considers, but they will also look at what’s known as the ‘insurance group’ of the vehicle concerned. Insurance groupings take account a number of factors including repair costs, part prices, safety features, security and car performance.

If you're looking to save money and get a cheaper car insurance premium, it may be worth thinking about the insurance group your car is in. Cars in lower insurance groups normally attract a lower premium. 1 is the lowest group, 50 is the highest.

The good news is that the Fourfour and the Fortwo Cabriolet and Coupe versions of the smart-car are all in insurance group 2.  However, watch the model of course as the Roadster version can attract a group 28 rating.

(Pssst ….by the way, the AMG is a group 50. That’s the highest grouping there is!)
