What's great about the VW Polo?
For a forty-ish year old model, the Volkswagen Polo is still going strong – it’s had a few facelifts along the way but it’s one of the most popular cars in the UK with 54,900 of them registered in 2015 alone. With its range of engine sizes, price points and resale popularity (it made the top 10 best-selling used car list 2014), there’s a Polo model for everyone.
Now into its fifth generation model, the VW Polo has taken style tips from the VW Golf – Volkswagen’s most popular model in the UK – making the current version the cute younger sibling rather than the slightly dumpy cousin.
The VW Polo is also considered one of the best ‘superminis’ around and it’s the supermini set that has taken the car world by storm. With room for four and more importantly luggage, it’s a perfect city car. Cars such as the Polo, Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Fiesta have gained market share over what used to be thought of as traditional family cars such as the Ford Focus, VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra.
The Polo also carries all the connotations expected by being part of the VW family. It’s reliable, practical and you won’t have to take out a second mortgage to buy one and run it – prices start at £11,495 and the most efficient model is the 1.4 TDI which runs at 83.1 mpg.
