Frequently asked questions

What are some of the best streaming services for children’s TV?

Popular streaming services also offer plenty of great content for kids to enjoy.

The most popular TV streaming services in the UK include:

  • Netflix. It has a good range of parental controls, which allow you to remove access to main account settings, lock profiles with a PIN and set up a customised profile for your child, so they’ll only have access to that.
  • Amazon Prime Video. Offers one of the biggest range of family content with more than a thousand titles.
  • BBC iPlayer.  iPlayer is free to use and is great for larger families, allowing access for up to five screens at a time.
  • NOW TV. Its monthly Kids Pass offers one of the cheapest and most flexible family streaming services.
  • Disney+. A must for both young and old Disney fans, Disney+ also offers a great range of age-appropriate content for children under seven.

What broadband speed do I need for streaming?

If you want your kids to enjoy HD movies and shows without being frustrated by buffering, you’ll need a minimum download speed of at least 2.8 megabits per second (Mbps). Buffering is when your programme pauses until enough data is downloaded for you to continue watching. But if the internet is being used on other devices in your home, you may need a faster connection. Fibre optic broadband with an average speed of 35Mbps should be enough to cope with most families’ needs.

Top tip

If you’re having problems because of a slower internet speed, switching from HD to SD can help avoid buffering. While the whole family might want to watch a Disney Pixar movie in High Definition, for example, little ones are unlikely to notice the difference while watching their favourite episodes of Bing or Peppa Pig.
