Free home insulation: a guide to the government scheme

Insulation can help reduce your home energy costs substantially. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always come cheap. So the government-led ECO scheme has made things a little easier for those eligible to apply for a free home insulation grant. Here’s what you need to know.

Do I qualify for free home insulation?

To qualify, you’ll need to live in England, Scotland or Wales. You’ll also need to be receiving a means-tested benefit, like Income Support.

The grant is currently only available to those who either have no home insulation, or whose current insulation is less than 100mm thick

If you live in Northern Ireland, you'll need to speak to the advisers on the Bryson Energy Advice Line to find out what grants are available and if you would be eligible. Call 0800 142 2865 to find out more.

Split 1

What type of insulation does the ECO scheme cover?

The ECO scheme includes cavity-wall insulation, solid wall insulation and loft insulation. You can also apply for financial aid to replace or repair a broken or inefficient boiler.

Split 2

Is home insulation worth it?

Most definitely, when you consider that you could be losing almost half of your heat through walls without proper insulation. Research has shown that insulating cavity walls could save you £145 each year, and insulating solid walls could save you a whopping £245 per year.

How much does insulation cost without the grant?

Depending on the type and size of home you’re living in, you could expect to pay from £300 to £720 for cavity-wall insulation. Solid wall insulation is even more costly, with internal wall insulation setting you back between £4,000 and £13,000, and external wall insulation costing between £8,000 and £22,000.

How can I save more money on energy costs?

There are many ways to save money on energy costs, in conjunction with home insulation. For example, if you’re eligible, you may be able to take advantage of Cold Weather Payments or apply for the Warm Home Discount Scheme.
