Finding the right health insurance policy for you

Having a health insurance policy in place can help ensure you receive speedy and effective care should you or your loved ones become ill.

When choosing health insurance, it’s important to find the right policy to suit your circumstances and your budget. These are some things to consider, to help ensure you get the right level of cover you need.

Most basic health insurance policies offer the following benefits:

  • quicker access to healthcare avoiding NHS waiting times - the number of people waiting more than 18 weeks to see a consultant on the NHS has increased by 35% in the past year
  • faster diagnosis and treatment of acute conditions that start after your policy begins
  • private hospital and clinic accommodation
  • possible access to the latest licensed medication currently not available on the NHS

However, the most basic policies usually only cover hospital admissions. So, considering that around 51% of GP referrals are for outpatient appointments, you may find the cheapest type of policy very limiting.

Although budget is obviously one of the main considerations, you should also factor in:

  • your age
  • your lifestyle
  • how many people you want cover for. Do you want individual cover for just yourself, or a policy for your whole family?
  • pre-existing medical conditions. Many insurance providers won’t cover a condition that you already have before taking out the policy

What else should I consider when choosing a policy?

The range of different health insurance policies and the level of cover they provide is vast. That’s why it’s important to shop around and find a policy that’s tailored to suit your needs.

Consider these aspects:

  • The types of treatment you want covered - you may want to opt for cover that includes:
    • outpatient appointments
    • mental health treatments
    • physiotherapy
    • complementary therapies
    • cash plans that cover every day healthcare, such as dental check-ups and optician tests
  • The amount of excess you’re willing to pay – the more you’re prepared to pay towards the healthcare costs before your policy kicks in, typically the cheaper the cover could be.
  • A six-week waiting option – this can also help reduce the costs of your premium. You can opt to receive NHS care rather than private care if you’re seen in the NHS within six weeks of a referral.
  • Choice of hospitals – most healthcare polices have a tiered pricing level, depending on the location of treatment centres. For example, access to hospitals in central London are often on the higher tier, which can be more expensive. Would you be willing to travel for treatment to keep the cost of your policy down a little?
