Lack of flood protection?

In the UK, we love talking about weather – what’s it’s doing, what it’s about to do and what it’s done. And there’s nothing more topical than talking about floods, especially as we approach winter. But the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned that thousands of homes in risk areas have no basic protection against floods installed.

Who is responsible?

This forms part of a complex battle to understand who is responsible for flood protection. Insurance providers have recently come under fire from the Environment Agency for failing to do enough to protect flooded properties. They argue that insurance providers should not just repair homes after a flood, they should also provide future protections too.

Local councils have gotten involved as they demand more funding from the government to combat flooding in their areas, as well as greater control over where that cash is used. Ministers are also campaigning to improve building standards to ensure that new homes in flood risk areas are made flood resistant.

What if I’m in a flood risk area?

Flood Re was launched in April 2016 and it works with insurance providers to ensure that home owners in high risk flood areas don’t have to pay huge premiums to insure their homes; which is great because one of the questions often asked is “will living in a high risk flood area impact my home insurance

But just because you live in a high flood risk area, doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to lower the cost of your premium – even just taking simple steps to protect your home from flooding could make all the difference, as the ABI contends. Grants are also available if your home has been flooded before. You can get up to £5,000 to flood-proof your property, which should help to limit the damage if a flood happens again.

Of course buildings insurance and contents cover are there to protect your home and your belongings but it’s also worth making sure your policy provides cover for alternative accommodation and check the limit as flood claims can take time to resolve and you don’t want to be worried about having nowhere to live while your home is repaired. Most insurance providers will include this, but it’s always good to double check – because wading your way to bed is never going to be fun.

Whether or not you live in a home at risk of flooding, protecting your belongings is always going to be of paramount importance, so find the right home insurance for you and comparethemarket.com.
