A nation of non-claimers?

Have you ever claimed on your home insurance? Not even when you’ve actually needed to? Some insurance providers can make it difficult to get home insurance if you’ve made a claim in the past. Our latest research has found that over 2.7 million Brits have avoided making a claim because you didn’t want to lose your no claims bonus. That’s even though many of you are paying between £100 and £200 for your annual cover.

No point claiming

Bonus time

We polled 1,300 homeowners and found that the decision to not claim to protect your no claims bonus is taken most frequently by 25-54 year olds, with over half (55%) stating this reason. That’s compared to 35% of over 55s.

The fear of losing your “no claims bonus” isn’t the only factor stopping us from making a claim. Over 42% haven’t claimed to avoid paying the excess, just under half (46%) admitted they didn’t think it was worth it, and 43% said they didn’t think the damage was big enough to warrant a claim.

It’ll cost how much?

Looking at the value of damage that would cause a homeowner to claim, the research found that over three quarters (78%) would contact their insurer if this exceeded £100. However, a small proportion (6%) admitted they would only claim if the cost of the damage exceeded £1,000.

Party animals

Despite this, you might want to claim more at this time of year as Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties cause mayhem in our homes. Nearly 10% of all UK homeowners (1.3m people)** have had to pay to repair damage caused during a party in their home. What’s more, nearly one in six (16%) homeowners have had their furniture damaged by a guest and over a third (36%) have had to try to clean up a stain caused by a party-goer. Who needs that while you’re dealing with a hangover?

“With over 1.3 million homeowners** paying to repair damage caused by a guest, it’s well worth checking with your insurance provider to see whether Accidental Damage is included within your policy, especially as we reach the height of party season. Although it’s often an optional extra, full cover could save you far more in the long run if you’re susceptible to particularly accident prone guests!”
