A simples guide

Does my home insurance cover students during term holidays?

Going to university is a hugely exciting and rewarding time for many. Thinking about boring things like insurance cover might be a million miles from your mind.  This can be doubly the case when it comes to term holidays. A time to relax and escape the books or to earn some money to take back with you.

Check your policy small print

Unfortunately, thieves don’t take holidays and young people are three times more likely to be the victims of a burglary. It’s estimated that one in three university students are victims of a crime each year.

Even if you do have insurance cover in place, it’s still worth checking whether your cover extends to specifically cover the period while you’re on holiday.

We would love to be able to give you a definitive answer to the question here. Unfortunately though, that’s just not possible. Insurance covers vary from provider to provider and from policy to policy.

Irrespective of whether you live on your own, in a shared house or a university hall of residence, it’s important that you check the small print of your policy.

reducing the risk of burglary at university

What we can say is, you can do some practical common sense things to reduce the risk. If you are living in shared accommodation or halls, take valuables home with you. If possible lock the door to your room securely. Certainly don’t leave anything valuable out on display where opportunistic thieves might see it.

If you can’t take things with you, it might be worth considering ‘walk in cover’. This is a type of insurance cover that protects you if you’re the victim of theft where someone didn’t have to physically break in to your accommodation. You’ll usually have to pay some extra premium but it might be worth it for the peace of mind.

If you don’t have cover yet be sure to read the policy documentation carefully before taking out the policy and make sure it has sufficient levels of cover to protect you in your circumstances.
