comparethemarket.com and SSE launch the cheapest energy deal on the open market
- The Exclusive 1 Year Fixed tariff from SSE is available for a limited time on comparethemarket.com
- At £759 a year, the tariff on comparethemarket.com is £11 cheaper than the previous cheapest tariff
16 September 2016 – comparethemarket.com and SSE have launched the cheapest energy deal on the open market, costing an estimated £759 per year. The Exclusive 1 Year Tariff is only available for a limited time and can be found here.
Pete Earl, head of energy at comparethemarket.com, said:
“High energy prices, well documented lapses in customer service and the availability of better deals from smaller providers have seen the Big Six lose a lot of custom over the past few years. However, exclusive tariffs such as this suggest that the big players are starting to fight back. Over the coming months we could well see more competitive tariffs such as this tie-up between SSE and comparethemarket.com in an attempt to win back market share, especially in the run-up to the winter months as the temperature starts to drop. Tariff innovation is something that the CMA wants to see more of - and proposed the lifting of the four tariff limit to encourage this - so we’ll see a lot more of this if the current regulations are lifted.
"The cheapest open market tariff until a couple of days ago was Avro Energy (Simple and Select) which cost £770 a year, so at £759 there is a slight saving to be made by choosing SSE's new tariff. However, the cheapest deal on the open market won't always remain the best value. It is really important to shop around when your fixed tariff comes to an end, as you will probably be moved on to the provider’s Standard Variable Tariff. This is very likely to lead to a significant hike in your bills. So whilst fixed tariffs like this where SSE and comparethemarket.com tie up are great, don’t forget to act when the fix finishes.”
