NEEDING THE TOILET, BEING HUNGRY AND SAYING THEY’RE ‘NOT TIRED’ ARE AMONG THE TOP EXCUSES CHILDREN GIVE FOR NOT GOING TO SLEEP
- Almost 50% of children use three or more excuses each night to prolong bedtime
- Over one third of children ask for another story before going to sleep
- Comparethemarket.com are on a mission to help simplify the bedtime routine with their newest meerkat toy – Limited Editions Sleepy Oleg toy
AUGUST 2020: Marking the launch of the new Sleepy Oleg toy, new research from comparethemarket.com shows the bedtime excuses children are giving to not go to bed and makes light of the UK’s bedtime routine. The average child in the UK gives 970 excuses a year as to why they don’t want to go to bed yet, making the bedtime routine extremely stressful and extensive for parents and families.
Research polling 1,000 parents of three to 10-year olds shows that over 70% of children sleep with a toy or comforter, and over one third of children need four or more toys or comforters to sleep. In a typical week, the average child goes to bed on time just three times, with parents aiming for the average bedtime of 19:50.
comparethemarket.com are adding to the much-loved collection of meerkat toys, with the youngest member of the meerkat family, Sleepy Oleg. Stepping in to support the nations’ bedtime routines, Sleepy Oleg knows all too well how to get a good night’s sleep. With children going back to school for the first time in months, Sleepy Oleg is here to help reduce anxieties and regain a stable routine of returning back to school.
Some of the most common excuses children give for not going to bed are being hungry, needing the toilet, being scared of the dark and over 50% of children often say they are ‘not tired’. Mum and Dads of children age three to 10 found they spend 34 minutes each evening getting little ones ready for bed – adding up to an average of nearly four hours every week.
Speaking on the reality of the bedtime routine, child sleep specialist Lauren Peacock says:
"Bedtime procrastination is one of the most common sleep challenges parents encounter with young children, and is likely to be particularly prevalent as children return to school this month. Amongst the most effective tools for avoiding bedtime battles are a calm and predictable pre-sleep routine and establishing a solid bank of multi-sensory sleep cues, such as a favourite bedtime buddy or comforter, to signal to a little one that it is time to snuggle down for sleep."
Julie Daniels, Head of Rewards at comparethemarket.com said:
