What does a home insurance adjuster do?

A home insurance adjuster is hired by an insurance provider to assess major home insurance claims for loss or damage, such as fire or flooding, and to determine the value of loss.

While you might think that a loss adjuster is only interested in cutting the value of a claim, they might, in fact, find you’re claiming too little and ultimately increase the value of a pay-out.

What do loss adjusters look for? 

A loss adjuster will visit your property as soon as possible after you make a claim. Their first priority is to assess whether you’re covered by your insurance policy for the loss. While in your property, the loss adjuster will assess:

  • the cause of the incident
  • the value of the loss or damage
  • whether you’ve met the terms and conditions of your insurance policy
  • whether you’re claiming for the correct amount

It’s common for the loss adjuster to take photographs of any visible damage, to support their findings and make sure the validity of your claim isn’t questioned further down the line.

Are loss adjusters impartial?

The codes of conduct for loss adjusters are set out by impartial industry bodies: the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters, the General Insurance Standards Council and the Association of British Insurers.

What’s the difference between a loss adjuster and a loss assessor? 

A loss adjuster is appointed by the insurance provider. A loss assessor is appointed by the policy holder and can liaise with the loss adjuster on the policy holder’s behalf. All policy holders have the right to appoint a loss assessor, although they tend to come into the picture when people aren’t happy with the way a claim is going.

What can I do to help speed up the claim process?

You can help to speed up the claim process by giving your loss adjuster receipts for any lost or damaged items, as well as any emergency repair work you’ve had done.

It’s important not to throw anything away until the loss adjuster has visited. Every piece of damage is evidence in support of your claim.

What can I do if I’m unhappy with changes made to my claim?

If you’re not happy with changes made to your home insurance claim, you have the right to hire a loss assessor to manage the claim on your behalf.
