New film research compiled by comparethemarket.com to mark the launch of Meerkat Movies, has found that classic films and established actors embody the magic of the movies for Brits.
- Johnny Depp and Judi Dench top the list of Brits' favourite actors
- Timeless classics are amongst Brits' favourite films, with 80's classic Dirty Dancing in the top spot
- Brits most loved movie line is "I'll be back" from The Terminator
- Stephen Fry named as the person we'd most like to go the movies with
- Laughter is preferred by women, with a fifth naming Comedy as their favourite film genre (20%)
- Action films are the 'go-to' choice for over a quarter of men (26%)
The nation's top five favourite movie lines are all retro classics with "I’ll be back" - The Terminator, in poll position followed by "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" - Gone With The Wind, "You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!" – The Italian Job, "Nobody puts baby in the corner" – Dirty Dancing, and "Play it again, Sam" – Casablanca.
The 80s classic Dirty Dancing, was voted the favourite film of all time by respondents, with Shawshank Redemption, Titanic, The Sound of Music and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy also in the top five.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, 'Comedy' was voted Britain's overall "favourite film genre" with 'action' coming in at a close second followed by 'Thriller', 'Sci-fi' and 'Rom-Com'. Whilst Johnny Depp and Judi Dench were identified as the nation's "favourite actor and actress."
Despite cinema prices rising 26% in the last five years*, the nation's love of cinema-going remains healthy. Over a third (36%) of the 2,013 people polled said they still watch a film on the big screen at least once a month. A fifth of Brits (19%) also feature the cinema in their description of an ideal date night.
In line with Britain's taste for pre-millennium films, all of the top five actors had established themselves as Hollywood favourites prior to the turn of the century, with Tom Hanks, Clint Eastwood, Robert De Niro and Colin Firth occupying the remaining spots. A similar trend rings true amongst "favourite actresses", with Meryl Streep ranked a close second ahead of Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts.
