Pet insurance increases
We all love an excuse to eat lots of sweets and wear silly outfits and Halloween is perfect for letting us do that. But like many human festivals – Halloween isn’t so great for our four legged friends. It’s not just the rowdy trick or treaters in peculiar outfits – it’s all those tempting treats that look so innocent but are actually oh so terrible for our pets’ tums.
Take chocolate for starters, even the most cast iron human stomach couldn’t eat endless amounts of it (but we can try) and for dogs, it can be fatal. Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is poisonous to dogs, cats and rabbits. The darker the chocolate, the more theobromine, which means that posh chocolate with 70% coco solids can be fatal to our furry friends.
But it’s not just those chocolatey offerings for trick or treaters that you need to worry about, sweets aren’t good for dogs either. Sweets are a double edged sword – the sugary ones are bad simply because they’re sugary and the sugar free ones are bad because they contain something called xylitol which is toxic to dogs. So, the lesson here is – during Halloween, don’t leave bowls of chocolate and sweets lying around where curious wet noses (dogs or children’s) can be tempted to gorge on what they find.
Whilst you can’t predict what the future has in store, you can be prepared and plan for the unknown – so if curiosity gets the better of your cat, or your pooch can’t resist gulping down forbidden fancies then you can at least be confident about paying the vet’s bill with pet insurance. Seventy-six per cent of small vet practices have increased their fees in the last 12 months but just under half (49%) of pet owners have insurance meaning pets are left untreated or their humans out of pocket.
If you’re one of the 51% of pet owners that don’t have insurance, you might wonder whether it’s worth it or need some help when it comes to choosing the right policy – either way our pet insurance hub can help answer all those questions.
There’s no question – us Brits love our pets and we do our very best to make sure they’re pampered and preened and in turn they love us unconditionally – so show them just how much you care and make sure you’ve got them covered.
