How to use Snapt – some frequently thought questions

We all think about saving money, and cutting down on our energy use as a good way of doing that. But we don’t all want to lower the thermostat and wear five layers of clothing – surely, there must be a simpler way? Well, there is – it’s called ‘Snapt’ (no, it’s not a typo) and if you don’t have a clue what Snapt is - here’s the answer and some other ‘frequently thought questions’ about it.

So, what’s Snapt all about then?

Snapt is a super-fast way to see if savings can be made on your gas and/or electricity. Most energy bills now come with a QR code (a funny looking pixelated box) and all the Snapt app does, is read the code – a bit like a barcode scanner at the till. Once your code’s been read, the information is sent straight to us, we then use the information provided to find a great deal on your energy. And we know it could save you money, because customers who compare and switch supplier, could save an average of £355** on their energy bills.

Snapt sounds technical – can I do it?

Yes, it’s easy – just download the app to your smartphone and away you go. There are no forms and no complicated questions to fill in because the QR code contains all the information we need.

Just activate the app and make sure the QR code sits inside the box. The app can still work if your bills are online, just point Snapt at the code on your computer screen and start comparing, it’s as simple as that.

What information is contained in the energy bill QR code?

The QR code contains your postcode, current supplier, the tariff you’re currently on, along with its end date, payment type and annual usage.

What if I have more than one QR code?

If you have more than one code – such as with a dual fuel bill or if your gas and electricity is from different suppliers, then that’s not a problem. Just scan your first code and then follow the instructions in the Snapt app to add a second. It’s worth noting that the bills will need to be for the same address. If you want to find deals for two different addresses, then you’ll need to do them one at a time.

How does switching energy work?

The great thing about switching energy, is that once the decision’s been made, your new energy provider does all the legwork; they’ll even tell your current supplier.

Your new supplier will send a contract confirming the new tariff, start date, and all the other finer details, all you’ll need to provide is an up to date meter reading. Outstanding bills will need to be paid to your old provider, otherwise it could delay the switch – find out more in ‘The switching process explained’.

Switching’s not just straightforward, it’s also quick. Check out our page about switching times to see how quick it can be. And there’s nothing pear shaped to worry about, because the energy switch guarantee is a promise that if anything does go wrong then it’ll be sorted out quickly and compensated for.

For the indecisive or inquisitive, check out our energy hub, which will (hopefully) have the answers to any burning questions.

Why doesn’t my QR code work?

The government was a little late to the party providing a standardised guide for QR codes, so they don’t all follow the same format and some of them ‘read’ a little differently to others. This can make it hard for Snapt to understand codes in some instances.

If that happens, don’t get frustrated, use our energy comparison service instead, all the information you need is on your bill, but our guide to understanding it can help you through the process.

What do I do if I don’t have a QR code on my energy bill?

Don’t worry you can still get a quote. You can use our energy comparison service instead.
Just grab your bill, use our guide to understanding it, and you’ll be seeing your available prices in no time at all .
