Whether you have a vintage van for work or you’re a collector of restored vehicles, it’s important to get the right insurance in place. Let’s take a look.
When is a van considered to be ‘classic’?
There's no set definition of what makes a van ‘classic’. Some insurance providers may state that a van needs to be at least 15 years old; others might say 20.
Is classic van insurance cheaper than standard van insurance?
It can be, but the cost of cover depends on a number of factors. Generally speaking, classic vans are driven fewer miles each year than regular vans. An insurance provider might think there’s less chance of a classic van being involved in an accident, which could mean a lower premium.
Classic vans tend to be driven by older people with plenty of experience behind the wheel – something which can result in cheaper premiums. Comparing a range of van insurance quotes from a range of providers is another way you might find cheaper cover for your vehicle.
As well as your personal circumstances, a provider takes into account factors including the van’s value, its annual mileage and whether your vehicle’s driven for personal or business use.
What else do I need to consider with classic van insurance?
- Agreed valuation This is when you and your insurance provider reach agreement on how much your van is worth when you take out your policy. The provider will refer to industry guidelines for the make and model, but if you disagree you could ask a classic van dealer to help you with a valuation.
- Business use Some companies use classic vans as company vehicles because of their eye-catching appeal. If you use your van for any type of work, be sure you have commercial (rather than private) van insurance, and buy separate cover for the other business risks you face, such as insurance for your premises, stock and equipment.
- Events Lovers of classic vehicles often visit shows and events. If you’re driving your classic vehicle on a racing track (for example, as part of a time trial), you may have to pay a higher premium to cover the added risk.
- Membership clubs By joining a classic vehicle club, you might be able to get a discount on your premiums
Finally, once you’ve found a policy be careful not to exceed any annual mileage cap you set. If you do, let your insurance provider know immediately.
