When choosing a mobile phone deal, there are three types of contracts to consider:

A monthly mobile phone contract gives you a new handset plus a bundle of calls, texts and data (also known as airtime) for a monthly cost.
Contracts usually last between 12 and 24 months, so it’s a bit of a commitment. But if you’re always on your phone or keen to grab the latest model without splashing out upfront, this could be for you.

Happy with your current phone? A SIM-only plan gives you just the SIM card with the airtime you need – no new handset.
It’s usually either a one-month rolling plan or a 12, 18 or 24-month contract and can work out cheaper for your everyday use.

A SIM-free deal gives you an unlocked mobile phone without a SIM card, so you don’t have to commit to a contract with a specific network.
SIM-free phones are usually sold outright, though some retailers may offer payment plans or contracts that help you spread the cost. Whichever option you choose, you’ll be able to use any SIM card with the device.
SIM-free could be a good option if you want flexibility or if having a poor credit rating means you can’t get a phone contract.

Contract = new phone and a monthly plan. Great if you want the latest handset for a manageable cost. You’ll pay monthly and usually sign up for 12-36 months.
You can choose a package with no upfront cost and pay fixed monthly bills, but you'll need a credit check and will be tied into a contract.
PAYG = no phone, but added flexibility. Ideal if you already have a phone and don’t want long-term commitment. Just top up as needed or go for a rolling 30-day SIM plan.
This is often cheaper than a phone contract and there’s no commitment or credit check.

Yes, you can keep your number when you switch provider. All you need is a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) which is free and easy to get.
