Our home insurance team suggest you put your home security to the test and see how you measure up.

1) The myth: The elderly are most at risk of being burgled

The reality: The older you get, the less likely you are of being burgled - it’s actually people aged between 16-24 who are most at risk. And that’s not all - almost half (48%) of 18-24 year olds don’t have contents insurance, compared to just 8% of the over 55s. Eek.

2) The myth: Most people hide their valuables under their beds

The reality: Nope, 23% of people pop their valuables in their underwear drawer and 20% in their wardrobe. These are some of the first places burglars will look. Some people do still prefer to sleep on the decision though, with 12% opting to hide valuables under their bed.

3) The myth: Posting on social about your holiday is harmless

The reality: Checking into your holiday destination on Facebook is a common mistake that many of us make - it lets anyone looking to break into your home know that they’ve got the all clear for a couple of weeks.

4) The myth: Burglar alarms are too unreliable to be worth it

The reality: Even an empty burglar alarm box will act as a deterrent for an opportunist thief - it’s well worth getting one installed.

5) The myth: Think you’ve already got everything to deter a burglar?

The reality: Graveled paths and drives are one of the best deterrents. Most career burglars aren’t too keen on noisy approaches and getaways.
