What is drive away insurance?

Buying a car is exciting, but you can't legally drive it home unless you have valid insurance in place – and that’s where drive away car insurance comes in.

It's a type of temporary car insurance, which can be handy when you need cover quickly but don’t want to commit to an annual policy straight away.

Most drive away policies offer comprehensive cover, although the level of protection can vary between insurers. As an added bonus, it's really flexible, so you only have to pay for the cover you need.

Why does getting drive away insurance matter?

Even if you’re only driving your new car a few miles home, you’ll need valid insurance before you set off. Driving without insurance is illegal, and it’s not the kind of shortcut that’s worth taking.

If you’re caught driving uninsured, you could face:

  • A fixed penalty fine

  • Six penalty points on your licence

  • Your car being seized, and in some cases destroyed

  • A possible driving ban if the case goes to court.

When do I need drive away car insurance?

Common situations where you may need temporary drive away insurance include:

Buying from a dealership

Some dealers may offer complimentary driveaway insurance, but this isn't always available and may come with restrictions.

If no cover is included, you'll need your own insurance before driving off the forecourt.

Buying privately

When buying from a private seller, their insurance won't usually cover you to drive the vehicle home, so you’ll need to sort your own cover before setting off.

Collecting a car from an auction

Many auction houses expect buyers to arrange insurance before taking a vehicle from the site.

Bridging a gap in cover

Already have car insurance? You may be able to move your existing policy over to your new car, but it’s not always instant.

Collecting a car for someone else

Picking up a car on behalf of a partner, parent or family member? You’ll still need to be insured to drive it, even if the car isn’t yours.

Comparing annual insurance

Drive away cover can give you a bit of breathing space, so you can get the car home first and compare longer-term policies when you’re ready.

How long does drive away cover last?

This depends on the policy you choose. The good news is that it’s very flexible, with the option to get cover anywhere from an hour up to 28 days.

For example:

Situation

Cover you might need

Driving a car home from a local dealership

An hour to a day

Collecting a vehicle from another part of the UK

One to several days

Waiting for annual insurance to begin

Several days to a few weeks

Comparing annual insurance options after purchase

What’s covered by drive away car insurance?

Drive away cover is usually fully comprehensive, so you're well looked after from the moment you pull away.

What’s typically covered

Bumps and scrapes

Accidental damage to the car you're driving home, even if the mishap was your fault

Fire, theft and vandalism

Peace of mind if the worst happens

Third party liability

Injury to other people, or damage to their car or property

Your own injuries

Personal injury cover following an accident on the road (with limitations)

Legal costs

What’s usually excluded

Short-term cover isn't a substitute for a service

Driving outside what's on your policy

You’ll need to stick to what you've declared on your cover

Driving under the influence

Track days, racing or business use

Quick tip

Drive away cover can be good value for a one-off journey, but if you'll be driving regularly or for several weeks, it's worth comparing it against an annual policy.

Am I eligible to get drive away insurance?

Drive away cover is quick and easy to sort. That said, each insurer has its own rules.

To be eligible, you’ll generally need:

To be within the typical age insurers accept – often between 17 and 75

To hold a valid UK driving licence (some insurers are happy with EU or provisional licences too)

To have a permanent UK address

To want to cover a car that's taxed, has a current MOT and is safe to be on the road, and sits below the insurer's value cap

To have the green light to drive from the current owner, if the car hasn't been registered to you yet

You might not be eligible if:

You're older than 75, where many insurers stop offering short-term cover

You're a newer driver who's only recently passed

You don't hold a full, valid mainland UK licence

You’ve previously had insurance cancelled, refused or voided by an insurer

Your record includes recent claims, motoring convictions, a driving ban, or too many points for the insurer's liking

The car is higher-value, an unusual type, or you'd be using it for paid work such as deliveries, taxi or chauffeur driving

What details do I need to get cover?

To get a quote, it helps to have a few details ready before you start:

  • Your driving licence details

  • The car’s registration number

  • When you want the cover to start and end

  • Your driving history, including any claims or convictions

  • Your years of driving experience

  • Your no-claims bonus, if you have one.

What our expert says...

“Drive away insurance can take some of the pressure out of buying a car, because the immediate challenge is often less about long-term cover and more about getting home legally and with the right protection in place.

“That short window can be useful when you need time to check what cover suits the car, the journey, and what happens next. And with the Compare the Market app, you can quickly and easily get the cover you need before driving away.”

What to check before you drive away

Before setting off in your newly purchased car, make sure:

  • Your insurance policy is active

  • The vehicle is taxed

  • The vehicle has a valid MOT if needed

  • You've checked the policy documents

  • You have permission to drive the vehicle

  • You know when your temporary cover expires

  • You’re not using the car for anything excluded, such as paid delivery work or towing.

FAQs

Do I need insurance to drive away a new car?

Yes, you’ll need valid insurance before you drive your new car anywhere, even if you’re only heading home from the dealership or seller’s house.

Can I get drive away insurance from a dealer?

Some dealerships may offer drive away insurance when you buy a car, but it’s not guaranteed. It might only last a few days, come with conditions, or depend on the car and your personal details.

If dealer cover isn’t available – or it doesn’t suit what you need – you can arrange your own temporary car insurance before you collect the car.

Can I use drive away insurance if I’m buying a car privately?

Yes, drive away insurance can be useful when buying from a private seller.

Unlike a dealership, a private seller probably won’t offer temporary cover.

How quickly can I get drive away insurance?

You can get a drive away insurance quote from Compare the Market in just minutes.

Cover can start straight away depending on the provider – just make sure the policy is active before you drive.

Does drive away insurance cover tax and MOT?

No, car insurance doesn’t cover tax and MOT.

As drive away cover doesn’t make the car road legal, you’ll need to make sure the car you’re buying is taxed and has a valid MOT if it needs one before you take it home.

Can I get cheap drive away insurance?

You may be able to find cheaper drive away insurance by choosing only the length of cover you really need and checking a few options before you buy.

Keep in mind that:

  • The amount you pay also depends on your individual circumstances

  • Cheapest isn’t always best – make sure the policy gives you the protection you need for the journey.

Who handles a claim on drive away insurance?

If you need to make a claim while your drive away policy is active, contact the temporary insurer shown on your policy documents.

Even if you also have an annual policy, the temporary insurer will usually handle the claim for anything that happens during the short-term cover period.
