Sam Wilson is Head of Commercial Finance at Compare the Market and one of our core insurance experts on motor, home, van, motorbike and pet insurance products.
With over seven years at Compare the Market, Sam has a detailed understanding of how customers shop for insurance, what drives differences in premiums, and how small changes — such as shopping around at renewal or reviewing cover — can make a meaningful difference to what people pay.
Sam regularly comments in national and trade media on insurance costs, value for money and consumer savings, helping people understand how to get a good deal without focusing on price alone.
“I’ve spent my career using commercial insight and data to help people understand how to get better value — whether that’s through clearer information, comparison or knowing when to shop around.”
“My goal is to help customers feel confident they’re getting a fair deal on their insurance by understanding their options and comparing what’s available.”

Over the last seven years at Compare the Market, Sam has progressed through multiple Senior Finance Manager roles to lead as Head of Commercial Finance. He is responsible for the commercial performance of key insurance products, including motor, home and life, using data and insight to shape pricing, partnerships and propositions.
His role puts him at the centre of how households shop for insurance, giving him a detailed understanding of market trends, consumer behaviour and the real-world impact of rising costs on customers.
Before joining Compare the Market, Sam was Head of Finance at News Broadcasting, behind many of the UK’s local and national radio stations. In this role, he led financial planning, budgeting and performance reporting across a fast-moving, highly regulated media environment.
Within the newsroom culture, with its tight deadlines, regulatory scrutiny and a focus on audience engagement, Sam understands how stories are shaped and communicated. That understanding now supports his work as an insurance expert spokesperson for Compare the Market.
Sam began his career at News UK, one of the leading media businesses in the UK & Ireland with brands including The Times and The Sun. As a Reporting Finance Manager, he was responsible for delivering accurate, timely reporting and analysis to senior leadership, supporting strategic decisions for driving revenue. This early focus on data, insight and clear communication now informs the way he explains complex insurance and personal finance topics to consumers and the media.
This is Money: Home insurance premiums fall 9% in a year with London and Scotland seeing the sharpest drops
(March 2026)
"Sam Wilson, of Compare the Market, said: 'Homeowners are finally seeing some breathing space on premiums after a prolonged period of sharp increases.
'A 9 per cent annual fall could make a meaningful difference to many households, particularly in higher-cost regions such as London and the South East'.
Wilson said some of the 'intense cost pressures' that had been pushing home insurance prices up, including higher inflation and rebuild expenses, had began to 'ease'."
GB News: Martin Lewis urges drivers to renew car insurance on specific day to halve costs - 'Sweet spot!'
(January 2026)
"Sam Wilson, expert at Compare the Market, said Martin Lewis' advice was valuable for motorists so they can better understand their policy and make significant savings.
"However, the expert urged drivers to check their policies to ensure they are not underinsured, regardless of a much lower price.
"Mr Wilson added: "Our data shows you can save up to £499 annually by shopping around ahead of your renewal date.
"It's worth checking comprehensive cover, reviewing multi-policy and multi-car options each year, and making sure details like job title and named drivers are accurate, as small changes could have a big impact on price."
The Times: Could you still save money if you have to pay per mile?
(November 2025)
Sam Wilson from the consumer site Compare the Market said “While the new tax won’t remove the savings to be made from switching altogether, it will significantly narrow the savings advantage electric vehicle owners currently experience. Over the past year the difference in running costs between driving electric and petrol cars has been shrinking – with electric costs rising and petrol costs falling.”
