What is temporary learner insurance?

Temporary learner insurance (also called short-term learner driver insurance) is designed for drivers who are learning and hold a provisional licence.

It provides temporary cover – usually for a few hours, days or weeks – so you can practise driving in your own car or a friend or family member’s vehicle while supervised.

Did you know?

As this insurance is separate from a standard annual policy, the car owner’s existing insurance remains unaffected.

Do I need temporary learner insurance?

How much does temporary learner insurance cost?

Young and learner drivers tend to pay more for car insurance compared to other age groups.

However, short-term insurance can be a great way to help keep those costs down, as you only pay for the duration of cover you need.

Costs will also vary from person to person. Providers will look at some of these factors when putting your quote together:

  • Your age

  • The car you’re driving

  • Where you live

  • Cover length

  • Your claims history.

Comparing quotes lets you see what you could pay based on your situation, so you can choose cover that fits your budget.

What level of cover do I need as a learner?

Temporary learner insurance often gives you comprehensive cover as standard. However, some providers may let you choose between three levels of cover, depending on how much protection you want.

Comprehensive cover

Comprehensive policies cover damage to third parties, medical costs and injuries. They also insure against theft and fire, and damage to your car in an accident, even if you're at fault.

What does temporary learner insurance include?

Typically covered

  • Supervised driving practice

  • Driving tests

  • Driving your own car or someone else’s eligible vehicle

Not covered

  • Driving after you’ve passed your test

  • Commercial or business use

  • Unsupervised driving

  • Vehicles that don’t meet the provider’s requirements

  • Any use outside the policy terms

Always check your policy wording for full details and exclusions.

Can I get short-term learner insurance for any car?

You can get learner insurance on most cars, but not all. It can cover:

  • A car you own yourself, if you have a provisional licence and want to practise in your own vehicle

  • A friend or family member's car, as long as their own insurance and registration are valid, and you meet the licence and supervision requirements.

But:

  • Some policies may require the vehicle to have certain characteristics – for example not modified, only worth up to a maximum amount, or only in certain insurance groups.

  • If you're using someone else’s car, the vehicle must usually be insured under a standard annual policy as well – the learner policy simply sits on top.

As always, it’s important to check the provider’s terms before buying a policy to make sure the car you plan to learn in qualifies.

How long does short-term learner insurance last?

One of the main benefits of temporary learner insurance is its flexibility. You can compare cover with us from one hour up to 28 days.

Your short-term learner driver policy will usually end as soon as you pass your driving test. You'l then require a full car insurance policy for qualified drivers before you can drive again.

FAQs

Who needs temporary learner insurance?

Temporary learner driver insurance is for provisional licence holders who want to practise driving outside of their lessons.

It could be ideal if you only need occasional sessions or don’t want to be added to someone’s annual policy. It offers flexible cover for supervised practice in a friend’s, family member’s or your own car.

Can I get temporary learner insurance for the driving test?

Yes, many temporary learner policies cover you while taking your driving test, so long as the car meets DVSA rules. This could be useful if you’re not using your instructor’s car. Just ensure your policy covers the full duration of your test appointment.

Am I covered after I pass my test?

No, temporary learner insurance ends as soon as you pass your test. You’ll need to arrange a full-licence car insurance policy before driving again. This applies even if there’s time left on your learner policy.

Can I insure my own car with a provisional licence?

Yes, you are legally required to have insurance in place to drive a car you own, even if you’re still learning.

Can I get learner insurance for one day?

Yes. You can usually get temporary learner insurance for a single day or just a few hours.

Can I drive on a motorway as a learner?

Learner drivers can only go on motorways with a qualified instructor and in a dual-control car. It’s illegal to go on motorways if you’re practising with a friend or family member.

Does temporary learner insurance affect my parents’ policy?

Temporary learner insurance is usually separate from the main policy. If you make a claim, it shouldn’t affect the owner’s no-claims bonus.
