Why choose OVO Energy?
OVO Energy may have only launched in 2009, but it has quickly established itself as one of the UK’s leading energy suppliers. Ovo's surge to prominence came after taking on SSE customers in 2020.
OVO Energy is part of the wider OVO Group, a company dedicated to “creating a world without carbon”.
With this strategy at its core, the company aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2035. It plans to do this by cutting its own carbon emissions by 90%, while offsetting the remaining 10%. For example, each year it aims to plant a million trees across the UK.
Is OVO Energy one of the Big Six?
The ‘Big Six’ is a term used to describe the traditional UK energy market leaders. They were:
- British Gas
- EDF Energy
- E.ON
- npower
- Scottish Power
- SSE
However, in recent years, there’s been a significant shift in the market. In 2020, OVO Energy took on SSE’s customer base, which essentially propelled it to a seat at the top table.
In 2021, E.ON took on npower’s customers and spun off the new E.ON Next sub-brand.
After all this, OVO Energy has naturally filled SSE’s void, which means it is arguably part of a ‘new Big Six’.
OVO Energy tariffs

- Fixed-rate tariffs — has a set price per unit of energy (kWh) for a contracted period. Your bill may still fluctuate based on your usage.

- Dual fuel tariffs — combines your gas and electricity usage into one convenient bill, available as either a fixed-rate or standard variable tariff.
- Pre-payment tariffs — you pay for your energy upfront. This allows you to control your spending, but your supply is cut off when you use up your credit.
- Fixed-rate tariffs — locks the price per unit of energy (kWh) for the length of your contract. Your actual bill may still vary based on your usage.
- Standard variable tariffs (SVTs) — a flexible price per unit of energy that’s aligned with the wholesale market. This means your price could rise or fall.
- Dual fuel tariffs — simplifies your energy payments by combining your gas and electricity usage into one bill. This could be as a fixed or standard variable rate.
