The main thing to note about Huawei phones is that they no longer come with Google apps like Play Store, Gmail and YouTube. This is due to a US trade ban on the company amid tensions with China, which is where Huawei is based. The Mate series is Huawei’s line of top-of-the-range phablet smartphones, comparable to Samsung’s Galaxy Note. Its large, ultra-sharp screen means you can use it as a tablet as well as an everyday phone. The Huawei Mate 40 Pro was launched in late 2020 and features a superb camera, but doesn’t have Google services. Key features include:

Huawei branched out into the foldable smartphone market with its Mate X and Mate X2 models. Its most ground-breaking device yet is the Mate Xs, which uses the latest foldable screen technology to make multi-tasking easier and give you an all-round fantastic viewing experience.

With a folding phone, you’re effectively able to carry a tablet in your pocket. When it’s unfolded, the Huawei Mate Xs offers you a vibrant 8-inch screen that's perfect for streaming movies and playing video games. In its folded state, it turns into a more compact 6.6-inch screen. The downside is that foldable devices are very expensive to buy, heavier to carry and, at the moment at least, not seen as must-have gadgets.

Huawei phones tend to be cheaper than their competitors in the UK market because demand for them isn’t what it once was due to the lack of Google apps. Prices range from around £180 to £1,600, depending on the model you choose.
