About Virgin Media

Dating back to 2006, Virgin Media broadband deals have been available for many years, with a history dating back even further, with Virgin Media the result of multiple telecom company mergers.

Being one of the first providers to do so, Virgin Media packages include a wide range of services, including broadband, phone TV and mobile, all in one package. It’s also one of the only providers to offer contracts for students and 30-day rolling contracts for the majority of its services.

Virgin Media broadband works through its own network of cables and doesn’t require households to have a landline, meaning it’s also one of the few providers to offer broadband without line rental.

What Virgin broadband deals are available?

Virgin Media broadband offers a variety of deals with different speeds to suit your home. With Virgin Media’s special fibre-optic cable technology, you don’t even need a phone line, with super and ultrafast broadband speeds delivered straight to your home.

Virgin Media is known for:

M – a superfast fibre optic broadband service, which uses a different type of cable to Sky and BT. You can choose from four download speeds:

  • M50 – providing average download speed of 54Mbps
  • M100 – providing average download speed of 108Mbps
  • M200 – providing average download speed of 213Mbps
  • M350 – providing average download speed of 362Mbps

But, before you sign up, it’s also worth noting that:

  • Broadband isn’t truly unlimited, so despite having access to some great speeds you may find that traffic management causes your connection to slow at peak times, like many other broadband suppliers. If you don't want this, avoid providers that say 'fair usage applies'.
  • Virgin Media offers limited public WiFi – rivals like BT have public hotspots that customers can use.
To find out whether Virgin Media is available at your home, simply select the deal you’re interested in and enter your full address.

Remember that internet speed will depend on your location, so it’s best to do a broadband speed check when comparing broadband packages.

And if you have any non-Virgin Media technology in your home, Gadget Rescue fixing any issues. It’s a 24/7 chargeable support service for all Virgin Media customers.

According to Ofcom customer service research in 2019, 85% of Virgin Media broadband customers were satisfied with the service.

How do I switch to Virgin Media broadband?

Switching to Virgin Media is done in four steps.

  • Pick your Virgin Media package.
  • Place your order. Virgin will give you potential installation dates before you do so.
  • Contact your provider to cancel your services.
  • Get started with your free QuickStart pack or have a Virgin Media engineer set everything up for you.

What equipment does Virgin use?

Virgin Media’s broadband speeds are fueled by their use of DOCSIS® 3 fibre-optic technology. This type of cabling is exclusive to Virgin broadband, and can deliver speeds of up to 362Mbps.

If you have a Virgin TV package, you’ll receive a V6 box. This allows you to watch potentially hundreds of channels (depending on your bundle), as well as record up to six shows at once, while watching a seventh. It also allows you to pause and rewind live TV, as well as watch on-demand shows and films.

How much does Virgin broadband cost?

Holly Niblett

From the Digital team

“So many people are paying over the odds for their broadband after their minimum term has ended. It’s important to keep an eye on your contract end date, so you know when you can switch and save money - something that has now been made easier since Ofcom introduced the notification rule in February 2020. It's important to compare broadband deals to ensure you're paying the right price and getting the exact speed you need.”
