What to look for when comparing student broadband deals
Whether it’s researching coursework, Skyping the family or updating your social media status, broadband access has become an essential for any student. If you’re house-sharing then installing fibre optic, adsl or cable is a worthwhile investment – and many providers now bundle their services so you can add your landline, mobile and digital TV to your package. (It’s also worth considering whether to look at contents insurance to safeguard pricey tech such as laptops and smartphones so you’ll never be out of touch).
Here’s our guide on what to think about before signing up to get connected.
It’s now essential when you’re away at college or university that you have access to the internet. As well as staying in touch with friends and family via social media accounts, there are new, and dare we say, even more important reasons for needing access.
Increasingly you’ll need online material to supplement coursework, essays and revision, and let’s face it, you can’t do much these days without access to an email account.
Still not sure?
Here are our tips for getting the right broadband deal for you:
- Data allowance – You’ll probably want to use as much internet as you can, and as often as you’d like! In which case you might want to choose a large data allowance, otherwise you might get stung with extra data charges.
- Broadband speed - If there are more than 3 of you in the house, it might be a good idea to choose a deal based on speed. The more of you using the internet at the same time, the slower it’ll be. You don’t want pages taking minutes to load the night before course work is due…. or your favourite TV show buffering! Using a speed checker is a great way to double check this in your area.
- Value - Although some contracts are 9 months long, making it ideal for term time usage, it might not always work out to be the best deal. Some providers offer 12 months free, which might end up being cheaper even if you choose to cancel 3 months before the end of the contract. Don’t forget to take into account the cost of line rental, set up/cancellation fees and activation fees.
- Time – Around September it will take some time from order to installation. It’s best to get this booked early so it’s ready for when you start at the beginning of the term.
