Land Rover Defender car insurance

Why choose a Land Rover Defender?

Land Rover is a British institution, well-known for its practical and off-road ready 4X4 vehicles. The Defender has a cult following as the modern edition of the original Land Rover.

Previously known as the Series I, and first released a few years after WWII, the iconic Defender stayed in production for an impressive 67 years, until 2016. Re-released in 2020, the all-new Land Rover Defender is a sleeker, modern version of the classic.

This large SUV is made for off-road adventures, with a host of high-tech driver-assistance features to help you explore off the beaten track. But if the price tag doesn’t put you off, the Defender can also make a good family car, with enough room to accommodate the kids and their friends on the school run.

The new Defender is more comfortable than its predecessor, and now comes with modern features like a touchscreen. It also has a 5-star rating from the independent safety experts at Euro NCAP and comes with lots of advanced safety features, such as lane-assist and blind spot monitoring.

What insurance group is my Land Rover Defender in?

The Land Rover Defender has been around a long time, and it’s gone through some changes over the years, so it depends on the model you own. You can enter your model into our car insurance group checker to find out what insurance group it falls into.

This will depend on factors including trim, fuel type, engine size and how much it cost to buy. But you’ll typically find the Defender in higher insurance groups. That means they may cost more to insure than the average car. For example:

Model Insurance group
Defender 90 D240 (2020-2022) 31
Defender 90 HSE D240 (2020-2022) 35
Defender 90 X-Dynamic HSE D250 MI (2020-2022) 39

What cover do I need for my Land Rover Defender?

You can choose from three levels of cover for your Land Rover Defender:

  • Third party – covers you for damage or injury you cause to other people and property while driving. This is the minimum level of cover you’ll need to drive legally on UK roads.
  • Third party, fire and theft – as well as providing the minimum third-party cover, this level of insurance covers you if your vehicle is stolen or damaged by fire.
  • Comprehensive policies – offer the best protection for your Defender. They include all the cover you’ll get with a third-party, fire and theft policy, plus additional cover for any accidental damage to your own vehicle, regardless of whose fault it was.

You might assume that a comprehensive car insurance policy for your Land Rover Defender will be the most expensive, but that’s not always the case. That’s why it’s wise to compare different levels of cover to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

What extras can I add to my Land Rover Defender car insurance policy?

Many Defender car insurance policies with come with optional extras you can add on to tailor your level of protection. For an extra cost, you may choose to include:

Breakdown cover

Roadside assistance to help you continue your journey, and if necessary, recovery to a local garage for more extensive repairs. You can typically add breakdown cover for the UK or Europe

Personal belongings cover

Personal belongings cover so you’re not left out of pocket if your personal belongings are stolen from your car.

Personal accident insurance

Motor legal protection

Motor legal protection could help cover your legal expenses if a claim is made against you or you want to take another driver to court.

Lost keys cover

Lost keys cover if your car keys are lost or stolen, this can cover the cost of a replacement and in some cases pay for your locks to be changed.

Courtesy car cover

Courtesy car insurance means you’ll get a guaranteed replacement vehicle to use while yours is in the garage for repairs after an accident.

Cover in case you accidentally put the wrong fuel in your Defender (it happens to the best of us).

You might also choose to protect your no claims discount, so you can keep it if a claim is made.
Comprehensive car insurance policies may include some of this extra cover as standard. So it’s worth comparing levels of cover to make sure you’re not paying extra for something you could have got included at a lower price.

Frequently asked question

Is the Land Rover Defender expensive to run?

The Land Rover Defender is a big, heavy, bulky car so it is a bit of a ‘gas guzzler’. Most Land Rover Defender models have some hybrid assistance that helps to reduce running costs to an extent, but if you’re mostly using it to drive around town, don’t expect many miles per gallon.

There’s a hybrid version of the defender available, the P400e plug-in hybrid, which offers better fuel economy than other models.

How can I get cheaper car insurance for my Land Rover Defender?

To try and save money on car insurance for your Land Rover Defender you could try:

  • Reducing your annual mileage – the fewer miles you drive, the less likely you are to have an accident, statistically speaking.
  • Pay annually – if you can afford to pay your premium for the year up front, you won’t pay interest.
  • Only pay for cover you need – extra cover can come in handy, but it can also bump up your premium.
  • Park your car somewhere safe – where you park overnight can make a big difference to your premium.
  • Shop around – don’t accept the first price you see. Use a comparison service like ours to check you’re getting a competitive deal.
