The ability to transport us to the past, mixed with beautiful designs and increasing rarity means there’s no shortage of Instagram posts featuring classic cars. But which classic models are the most popular on Instagram? 

By analysing the number of hashtags associated with some of the best-known cars, we reveal the most Instagrammable classic car makes and models.

The top 10 most Instagrammable classic cars in the world

1. DeLorean DMC-12 - 729,475 posts

The top car on Instagram is also a movie star – the Back to the Future films catapulted the DeLorean into the public imagination. Instantly recognisable, especially with its gullwing doors, it’s no surprise that this classic car is a favourite on Instagram.  

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the DMC-12 is made without paint or a clear coat - just brushed stainless steel. Only 8,987 DMC-12s were created in their purpose-built, Belfast-based factory, so to get behind the wheel of this car would be any car fanatic’s dream. This iconic vehicle has a maximum power output of 130 hp and can go from 0-60 in 10.5 seconds. 

2. Pontiac Firebird Trans Am - 717,588 posts

In second place is another car with movie fame. Starring in Smokey and the Bandit, the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am has been a popular American muscle-car for decades.  

One of the most classic and highly sought-after models is the 1969 Trans Am as only 697 were produced. All feature a unique white paint job with two blue stripes and have a maximum power output of 265 hp, allowing the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am to go from 0-60mph in 8.7 seconds. 

3. Ferrari F40 - 481,085 posts

Designed in secrecy, this Ferrari model sent waves through the car world when revealed. Known as the last car approved by Enzo Ferrari it took only 13 months for the F40 to go from conception to completion.  

The design is based on creating the aerodynamic shape that makes its top speed of200mph possible, while the rear spoiler and NACA air vents are what make it so recognisable. This highly coveted car’s maximum power output is 471 hp and it can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.8 seconds.  

4. Porsche 993 - 419,152 posts

The Porsche 993 improved on the visual style featured on its predecessor, the Porsche 964. Notable differences include the wider and flatter wings at the front of the vehicle, as well as higher positioned taillights.  

Small production numbers, drivability and sleek design have made the Porsche 993 a favourite of classic car enthusiasts. This beautifully designed car has a maximum power output of 402 hp and reaches 60mph in an impressive 2.7 seconds - the fastest of any of the cars in the top 10.  

5. Porsche 356 - 398,225 posts

The first Porsche to be released in 1948 was the Porsche 356 Roadster. Easily recognised by its open-top design and split-in-two window screen, the vintage look of the 356 takes you back in time. This motor’s maximum power output is 55 hp, which means it takes 17 seconds to accelerate from 0-60mph.

6. Citroen 2CV - 333,475 posts 

Instantly recognisable, the Citroen 2CV is a familiar sight to admire on the road. A cult following, formed during its 42 years of production, has made the pared-back, quirky design a pillar of popular culture and a favourite of classic car lovers. Featuring a maximum power output of 29 hp, the 2CV is capable 0-60mph in 9.8 seconds.

7. Ferrari F50 - 323,436 posts

Created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ferrari, the F50 not only looks great, but provides the ultimate driving experience. The removable roof is accompanied by a V12 turbocharged engine allowing the model to reach 0-60mph in just 3.8 seconds – making the F50 the closest thing to a road-going Formula 1 car the company ever built. 

With fewer than 350 units delivered straight to pre-approved collectors in the three years it was produced, it’s no surprise that Instagrammers go mad for rare sightings of the Ferrari F50.

8. AC Cobra / Shelby Cobra - 310,113 posts

Considered to be ‘the most iconic American sports car in history’, the Shelby Cobra was redesigned around its 427 FE motor to compete with other high-performing supercars of the time. The redesign saw changes made to the frame, body and chassis to house bigger wheels and to handle the added force the engine would place on the car. Just over 1,000 Cobras were created and were mainly sold in the USA. 

Developed by American racing driver Carroll Shelby in 1962, the AC Cobra has a maximum power output of 410 hp and can accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds.

9. Lamborghini Miura - 257,505 posts

With a maximum power output of 350 hp, the Lamborghini Miura is the fastest production line car in the world, with a top speed of 280km/h. Recognisable by its sleek design and iconic “eyelashes”, this road car is often hailed as the world’s first supercar. With a 0-60mph acceleration of 6.7 seconds, it’s no surprise that it’s the ninth most instagrammed car in the world.

10. Austin Mini - 244,702 posts

An icon of 60s design, the Austin Mini has a cult-like following. Small, visually appealing and nostalgic, the Austin Mini was made popular by celebrities, artists, and even police forces, which solidified its position as a beloved car for many decades. With a maximum power output of 39 hp, it takes 12.4 seconds for this car to accelerate from 0-60mph.

Using a seedlist of popular classic cars, the individual car model and make’s most used hashtag on Instagram was ranked against others in the list (with the most to least number of times used). Hashtags are accurate as of 21st September 2022.
